Psychological Experiments

We have to remember that Jekyll and Hyde are the same person, 'he represents the cry of victorian man of his imposed underground'. Dr Jekyll on the outside wants to appear better than everyone else, but hide his 'sinful' side.
Here are two famous experiements testing the psyche of 'regular people', the teacher is told to administer an electric shock every time the learner makes a mistake increasing the level of shock each time. There were 30 switches on the shock generator marked from 15 volts (slight shock) to 450 (danger – severe shock). The learner gave mainly wrong answers (on purpose) and for each of these the teacher gave him an electric shock.
It was a test of conflict between obedience to authority and personal conscience, on the surface a lot of the people were anxious in causing the shocks, but were conflicted because they were told to do it by an authority figure. Being the guy in the 'white coat'.

Milgrim Shock Experiment

Stanford Prison Experiment

To investigate how readily people would conform to the roles of guard and prisoner in a role-playing exercise that simulated prison life.To study the roles people play in prison situations, Zimbardo converted a basement of the Stanford University psychology building into a mock prison. He advertised for students to play the roles of prisoners and guards for a fortnight.

The results were brutal within a very short time both guards and prisoners were settling into their new roles, with the guards adopting theirs quickly and easily.
Within hours of beginning the experiment some guards began to harass prisoners. They behaved in a brutal and sadistic manner, apparently enjoying it. Other guards joined in, and other prisoners were also tormented.

Chapter 1 - Main points

Main Characters:
Mr Udderson - He is an innocent as he appears

Mr Endfield - Can assume he is a dirty stop out

Mr Hyde - A little man who was stumping along at a good walk

POV: Point Of View - The first chapter seems to be from Mr Utterson's perspective, it was recommended to us for our short story to be from the perspective of one of the characters.

Main Points:
  • Meet Grabrial Utterson - a lawyer (dreary, yet somehow loveable) sticks up for the men.
  • Out walking with distant cousin - Mr Enfield
  • Mr Enfield tells Mr Utterson a story about the strange men who lives behind the door.
  • Enfield grabs Hyde
  • Even the women 'as wild as harpies' wanted to kill Hyde.

Task - William Brodie

A greatly respected member of Edinburgh's society, William Brodie (1741-88) was a skilful cabinet-maker and a member of the Town Council as well as deacon (head) of the Incorporation of Wrights and Masons. However, unknown to most gentlefolk, Brodie had a secret night-time occupation as the leader of a gang of burglars. An extra-curricular activity that was necessary to support his extravagant lifestyle which included two mistresses, numerous children and a gambling habit.

It is said that Brodie's bizarre double-life inspired Robert Louis Stevenson, whose father had had furniture made by Brodie. Stevenson included aspects of Brodie's life and character in his story of a split personality, 'The Strange Case of Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde'

Researching the time period

Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde was written in the victorian period, the "Victorian Era" was the period of Queen Victoria's reign from 20 June 1837 until her death, on 22 January 1901. It was a long period of peace, prosperity, "refined sensibilities" and national self-confidence for Britain.

What interested me about this time period (and what I think would make an interesting short story) is that around 1888 Richard Mansfield took the starring role and was much praised for his performance. But events took a dark turn when, later that month the infamous Jack the Ripper murders began. Mansfield’s performance was so convincing that press reports suggested he might be a possible suspectThe murderer was never caught

Short Story

Two doors locked and bolted, big and blue always together. Until the morning they're secret is safe. Inside they hold events to remember, and some to forget both intentionally and not. It's a place of warmth and comfort, with high quality food and drinks. I enter bright eyed, but tired eyed the next.

I was describing my where I works doors, this attempt just shows me I have a long way to go.

Purchased

I have purchased the book, so I am able to write notes wherever I please. I will hand it down through the family, it will have so many notes.

I need to at least read the first chapter by next week.

Introduction

You will explore narrative through story adaptation in the context of animated content culminating in a 2,000 word written text.
This project focuses on the analysis and application of narrative strategies in relation to animation. The project will stimulate investigation and critical discussions related to your own creative practice and explore the application of appropriate vocabulary and use of language in relation to narrative.

I will have to create a 500 word short story adaption of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, and a 1500 essay evaluating why I chose to adapt it in that way.

I MUST HAVE:

  • Research Portfolio (Blog or PDF)
  • 2000 word text consisting of the following: a 500-word story adaptation with visuals and 1500 word analysis and conclusion.
DUE: 17/02/2017
